Once upon a time, long, long ago, there lived, in the mountains, three wiseman.

Each of these wise men had their own special gifts, which they would use to make other people happy.

One of them is named Geoff. He makes robots. These robots help him tend to his tulip gardens.

The second wise man was named Cliff. He would make a magical tea from the tulips that Geoff would grow.

The third was named Bliff and he didn’t make tea or build robots. He was the quiet sort and tended to the herds in silence. Bliff has a secret that the two other wiseman did not know.

Bliff was able to speak to all of the goats in the herd and they could tell him everything that happened around their land. The goats would venture far and wide and would bring stories back to Bliff. On one spring day, one of the goats told Bliff of a girl who had ventured into their land.

His goat described a girl unlike any other Bliff had ever seen. Her hair, it was said, was red as if touched by flames. Her complexion was fair, and her sure, fleet footed gait would soon carry her to the village nearby.

The goat explained that the girl carried with her an enchanted spider with all sorts of abilities. She would use this spider to find those who had evil in their hearts, and then to bring them to justice for any misdeeds they had done.

The more the goat told Bliff the more concerned he grew. He and his kin have long dwelt in peace in these lands and he did not like what this strange young woman might mean to his village. Quickly, no sooner than the goat had finished her story, he made his way back to his brothers, Geoff and Cliff.

Bliff told his brothers that he had heard rumors of a red-headed vigilante with an enchanted spider roaming the villages. Immediately, they too were concerned of what might happen if she continued taking matters into her own hands. Thankfully for Bliff, they did not ask where he had heard of this girl, as they did not know that he could communicate with the goats.

The brothers have tended to this village even as they had tended to their herds—with careful patience and nurturing care. The village had since become a place of splendor and hushed admiration amidst the neighboring realms. They liked little this girl’s convictions and what its likely to bode; so, they talked long into the night deciding what they must do.

They decided that they would have her visit them at their home, and have a talk with her and the spider. It was decided that since Bliff was the one who had learned of her, that he would be the one to approach the girl. So off he went, along with one of the goats down to the village.

Bliff observed little haste however, as was his way. And it took him the better part of the morning that day to reach the village with his goat, Bella. The village was dreadfully silent as he set foot on its outskirts.

When he finally reached the village, it was nothing that he could have ever predicted or imagined. The entire village had been put to justice by the red haired girl’s spider. Bella brayed in fear.

Bliff comforted Bella with a gentle pat. Once he saw Bella was no longer afraid they looked for the strange girl in the bright, crisp Autumn afternoon. For a time it was eerily silent and then Bliff and Bella heard a soft sobbing from not too far ahead.

The sobbing was coming from the girl with the red hair who was huddled in a corner by an old stone wall. Slowly, Bliff and Bella approached her. As they did, they noticed that the spider was gone.

“What’s wrong, little one? Why are you crying?” Bliff asked her in his quiet tone as he picked a spot close by to sit. Bella, however, was more hesitant to approach.

However, Bliff had kindness in his eyes and it was impossible for her not to feel comfortable around him. She replied, “my spider has left and has decided that he wants to take over the village. I’m not sure what he is planning, but its terrifying me.”

  • Icarus 2:50 pm on December 11, 2009 Permalink

“Well that wouldn’t do; that will not do at all!” Said Bliff.
“My name is Bliff, little one. And that there is Bella,” He says while pointing at his goat.
“How about we go look for your spider and you can tell me what it is you are worried about him doing?”

  • buduvoodoo 1:36 pm on December 16, 2009 Permalink

“My name is Mara,” replied the girl, “I suppose we should find the spider and see if we can stop him. I’m afraid that it may be very dangerous, but it is certainly worth trying.” So the three of them set off into the village in search of the spider.

  • Icarus 1:24 pm on December 18, 2009 Permalink

Mara sang a soft song to herself while they searched the silent village. Bliff and Bella couldn’t make out the lyrics and the melody was decidedly melancholy. Soon, the afternoon light begin to turn golden and dusk was upon them.

Soon, when the sky turned dark, and the stars started to shine in the night, the spider appeared in the moonlight. The song was how Mara would call the spider. Bliff and Bella looked in horror at the spiders foamy fangs.

  • Icarus 3:15 pm on January 28, 2010 Permalink

Mara was not afraid. Her bright eyes were clear and her voice ringed as she called to the creature. Her call was not in a speech Bliff or Bella understood; nor was it the sound of a human voice; the call was the sound of a brook rushing quickly over smooth pebbles.

The spider was soothed by the song and replied to Mara in a similar tongue. Suddenly one of Geoff’s robots appeared from over the hill with tulips in his hand. Distracted, the spider turned away from Mara and fixed its gaze upon the robot.

Geoff’s voice projected hollowly then from the robot’s mouth as the robot extended its arms to offer its present. “Greetings, to you both!” The spider snarled and leaped to attack.

As the spider leaped, the robot braced himself for the onslaught. The spider sailed through the air right towards the robot. The robot held his arms up in the air with the tulips and for some reason the spider seemed afraid.
